The Museum's signature series entitled, "An Evening With," is designed for open dialogue and attracting new and diverse audiences to the Museum by welcoming experts and personalities in history, politics, the media, and the arts to present issues in the form of a moderated discussion.
Supported by TD, the Museum is planning two events for Black History Month: "An Evening with Desmond Cole" (English event) and "An Evening with Edem Awumey and Blaise Ndala" (French event). If COVID-19 restrictions have not been lifted by February, the Museum will host these as virtual events. Writers offer the world a unique perspective of their own lived experiences, in which readers can relate to, or learn from a different worldview.
In their respective works, Desmond Cole, Edem Awumay, and Blaise Ndala address what it means to be Black. Whether giving voice to stories that are not often told, drawing attention to the struggle against racism in Canada, or exploring issues of fear, repression and the power of creativity, these authors address issues of critical importance to contemporary Canadian society. The Museum will continue its work with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board's Young Black Leadership Course for their collaboration and participation in the events. These events will offer the students a unique opportunity to participate and enhance the experience through the question and answer portion of the evening.
