Jan 1, 2021 - Jun 30, 2021Add To Calendar
Digital Carnival: Z will be an interactive, community-engaged public showcase of cutting-edge media artists and digital innovation, focusing on gender and body politics in the Gen-Z and post Gen-Z era. The project includes two components: Featured Artist Exhibition, in partnership with the Richmond Art Gallery, and an Online Media Art Festival, including exhibitions, performances, workshops and other interactive activities.
Presented from January-June 2021, the initiative will include local and international artists, and engage audiences across Metro Vancouver. For this initiative, we will present Nancy Lee and Kiran Bhumber's first solo exhibition, Union, from April to June 2021 in partnership with the RAG. Featuring a brand-new body of works, Union will be an immersive trans-media gallery experience that reimagines the cultural traditions of a Indo-Sino wedding of two brides set in a futuristic dystopian landscape. Working through the artists' diasporic identities, the exhibition will investigate how immersive technologies can transform cultural artefacts and ritualistic performances into present day realities.
Leading up to the exhibition, we will work closely with the artists to create opportunities for engagement with Richmond's Indo and Sino diasporic communities through focus groups, workshops, and talks, as well as consultations with cultural scholars and elders.
The Online Media Art Festival will showcase 8-10 selected media artworks by diverse artists, and present alternative conceptions of the relationship between bodies, gestures, culture and society.
