Event Details

In partnership with Matter of Black, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and supported by the City of St. Catharine's, our Emancipation Day celebration will be divided into two days.

Saturday is the Online Niagara Black History and Cultural Tour. This educational virtual tour will focus on historically relevant locations in the Niagara Region, giving voice to the stories of those involved in the Underground Railroad and of the emancipation of former slaves. Lunch packages will be available from our restaurant partners to enjoy from home. The virtual tour will also feature a performance by Diana Braithwaite and Khea Emmanuel.

Our Sunday event will be a virtual online picnic. Under normal circumstances, the Emancipation Day picnic would take place (as it did traditionally) in Lakeside Park. Due to the pandemic, we are instead providing an online experience featuring various workshops, sessions and speakers focusing on Black Culture.

Musical entertainment will be provided, featuring guest artists JUNO Award Winner Sammy Jackson, Tiki Mercury-Clarke, and the Toronto Mass Choir.

This is a FREE event that will stream on our website, Youtube and Facebook channels.
